Grace Notes – 05/22/19

It’s easy in our walk with Jesus to get comfortable, in a routine, or feeling settled. Jesus defeating death is a BIG deal, and we are going to spend May talking about what it looks like to respond to the goodness of God’s grace. Jesus calls us to get a little uncomfortable. We are going to embrace the risk together and talk about some of those things that make us cringe a little bit: evangelism (telling the story of why we are Christians to others—gasp!), generosity (yep, a conversation about money), failure (because what is riskier than falling flat on your face), and change (we have a little bit of that in front of us here at Grace!). Discover the joy it is to step into the risk with Jesus at Grace!
Update from Pastor Lora and Julie Wilke from UMC Next
Pastor Lora and Julie Wilke return home today with a lot of hope about the future of the UMC!  They have been working with 600 US United Methodist leaders to pave a way forward that denounces the Traditional Plan that created harsher oppression for LGBTQ people and instead works to be a place of justice for all people.  Julie will share the Glimpse of Grace on Sunday and Pastor Lora will preach on risking change (which will be hard to preach about without a reference or two of this amazing gathering movement!)  Pastor Lora will be one of the co-conveners moving forward for the Great Plains Conference and will co-lead a debrief session at Annual Conference next week.  Thank you for your prayers!
Neighboring Study – Tuesdays
Are you curious about what all this Neighboring talk is about? Did you miss Grace’s earlier sessions on Neighboring? Are you interested in knowing more about how God has called us to love our actual neighbors? Then come join us in a 6 week study of The Art of Neighboring, the book that introduced Grace to Neighboring. You’ll learn more about your neighbors, your faith, and yourself. Led by Neighboring Team members Joy Lenz, Roger Moon, and Sparla Dick, this group meets Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm, May 7 through June 11. Child care available, if needed. Contact Joy at for more information.
Youth Group – May 26
Youth Group will meet on Sunday, May 26th from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Acolyte Training/Review – June 9

Because God calls us to care about others:
Missions & Social Justice Team is offering education information about how our faith connects to various social concerns. Each month they will focus on a specific topic and each week will focus on a different faith lens to view that topic. This month is Health Care.

What do the facts say about Health Care?
– In 2007, illness and medical bills contributed to 67% of American bankruptcies.
– In 2012, the per capita spending on health care in the United States was $8,745, which was 42% higher than the second-highest per capita spending (Norway) and almost 90% higher than many other industrialized nations.
– Life expectancy at birth in 2015 was 50 years in Somalia vs. 83 in Switzerland.

Congratulations Charles McKinzie!
We are excited to have recommended Charles McKinzie as a candidate for certified ministry Sunday at a called charge conference and are so proud of his answering God’s call!  Charles has been appointed as the pastor of one of our neighboring churches, Winfield Grandview UMC, beginning July 1!  We are grateful for the ways he’s led Grace as council chair, SPRC member, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and more.  We will soak in this next month and a half with their family before they follow God’s lead into the next chapter.
