Ash Wednesday Worship – Tonight! at 5:15pm
Join for a 30 minute worship service to begin the season of Lent with reflection, silence, and the imposition of ashes as we turn toward Jerusalem for forty days.
Lent begins on Wednesday
Our theme will be “stonecatchers: 40 day of letting go & receiving grace.” This theme idea came from an illustration in Bryan Stevenson’s book Just Mercy. Stevenson is a lawyer who helps to work for a more holistic justice system. He wrote about a time where a woman called him a “stone catcher,” because most people just throw stones at each other. He, however, was in the business of catching the stones being thrown. This season of Lent, we are going to be in the business of catching the stones being thrown—stones of greed, exclusion, entitlement, and silencing. Join in worship these next 40 days to become a stone catcher instead of a stone thrower.
What will you do for Lent?
Lent invites us to journey with Christ to the cross—often giving up something or adding a practice the 40 days of Lent to help us grow closer to God. There will be several books and devotionals to borrow from Pastor Lora, but here are some other good ideas:
Rachel Held Evans compiled list of suggestions:
40 Bags in 40 Days Decluttering Challenge:
“Keep Watch With Me” Daily Email Reflections
from diverse voices (including several of Pastor Lora’s Vandy classmates!)
Whatever you choose to do, may it be a holy and beautiful time in your relationship with God!
