Grace Notes 6/6/18

This Sunday we will be focusing on Amos 5:14-15, 18-24 and the Social Community section of the Social Principles. We will talk about the gift of God’s justice rather than the moralism we often equate with justice. It is joyful and a gift! Sandra Fatuma AND HER FAMILY will be giving the Glimpse of Grace testimony (praise be to God!) and some Camp Horizon staff are going to lead us in our closing song (get ready to leave with a whole lot of joy!). See you Sunday!

Green Team- Plastic Fact #3

National Geographic magazine has embarked on a multi-year project to raise awareness about the global plastic waste crisis.  They have titled the project “Planet or Plastic?”, an obvious wordplay on the phrase “Paper or Plastic”.  It is nearly impossible as a consumer to avoid purchasing plastic in some form or another  Plastic is both a miracle product and the scourge of the Planet.  The most recent issue of National Geographic introduces the topic.

Over the next 8 weeks the Green Team will be including a “Fast Fact” about plastic pollution in Grace Notes.  By raising awareness to the problem it is our hope that the GUMC congregation will increase efforts to recycle plastics, but most importantly seek ways to reduce the consumption of plastics in our daily lives.

Fast Fact Number 3:
Shoppers in the United States use almost one plastic bag per resident per day. (or 365  per year, as shown by the flag)
Shoppers in Denmark use an average of four plastic bags a year.  (shown in the lower right)

The Green Team encourages the Grace community to recycle.

If your only stumbling block to a recycling commitment has been the $20 deposit on the recycling container, we’d like to help. We have funds available to help families pay the required deposit. If you are interested:

  1. Pick up a Recycling Cart Voucher from the church office.
  2. Fill out the form and take the complete form to the church office.
  3. You will be notified when a check is ready.
  4. Pick up the form and the check and take it to City Hall for your recycling cart.

The City of Winfield has taken steps to make recycling easy. You don’t have to worry about sorting. They will pick up your recyclables weekly if you put them out.

Accepted recyclables include:

  • Rinsed aluminum & steel cans
  • Cardboard – flattened – free of food & grease (i.e. pizza boxes, etc.)
  • Rinsed glass bottles, jugs, & jars
  • Rinsed plastic containers- #1 – #7
  • Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, junk mail, cereal & dry food                  boxes

Raquel Resendiz in DC!

The General Board of Church & Society welcomed their 2018 class of Ethnic Young Adult interns! They live in community, serve at nonprofits around the city, and participate in educational seminars each Friday. They are excited to spend the summer learning from these eight young United Methodists, including our very own Raquel Resendiz! Stay tuned throughout the summer to hear about their experiences in Washington, D.C.
