Beginning August 19th, we will begin a three week series called “This Is Us.” This will be a three week crash course on the core values of Grace UMC based on our mission statement: welcoming ALL to grow in grace together and to share God’s love on campus, in our community, and in our world. Who has God called us to be? What is our unique identity and mission? How do we share the story of who Grace is as a church? Commit to being with us for three weeks to learn about this place called Grace. It is the perfect time to invite some friends, reach out to someone you haven’t seen in awhile, or to bring an neighbor with you.
August 19th – Missional
Grace is a church whose core identity is to be missional—to exist for the sake of those outside our walls. We will study the story of Jesus pausing to heal the woman who reached out to touch him when he was on his way to heal someone else, and how Jesus calls us to see everyone before us as people with whom we are called to share God’s love. We will celebrate Education Sunday with a back to school blessing for our students, teachers, staff, and partner school of Irving Elementary. The children will invite us into mission with the Third Sunday Mission Offering. This month they are collecting money for Irving. The choir will kick back off and SC students will be back! Join us as we learn what it means to share God’s love on campus, in our community, and in our world. Allison Hughes will be giving the Glimpse of Grace.
August 26th – Welcoming
Grace is a church who believes everyone is created in God’s image. We will study the story of Jesus calling even the tax collectors and sinners to follow him. The expansiveness of Jesus’s calling reminds us that each and every one of us are created with a unique set of gifts and Jesus shares with us his unconditional love. As a church we strive to welcome, include, and advocate for ALL people regardless of ability, race, age, gender, socioeconomic status, sexuality, ethnicity, or political affiliation. On this day, the choir will be singing “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman and we will celebrate the responsibility and gift it is to be a church full of quirky, eclectic, arms-wide-open people who learn to love one another as Jesus loves us all.
September 4th – Grace-Filled
Grace is a church that lives up to its name. Our mission statement reminds us of our commitment to grow in grace together. We will study the scripture where the disciples ask Jesus how many times they should forgive…seven times? Jesus gives them an answer that seems hard to live up to! But it is a reminder that to be in community we have to be people of grace. Come find out the gift of
community and how to live out relationships rooted in forgiveness.
Choir Kicks off August 15th
Calling all people interested in serving God by using your musical gifts!!!! Chancel Choir begins again on Wednesday, August 15th at 7pm. The choir rehearses from 7-8pm and there is nursery provided. We just got music in for “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman to go along with the next sermon series, and we would love to have a lot of voices to start the year off right. If you’d like to join the choir you can talk to McKenzie Wheeler, Pastor Lora, any of the choir members, or simply show up next week! The choir sings every Sunday and adds so much to our worship service. Thank you to all who use their gifts this way!
Bell Choirs Begins August 22nd
Would you like to join the adult bell choir? They will begin on Wednesday, August 22nd at 6pm. There is nursery provided. To join the choir talk to Tony Gropper (Anthony.email@example.com) or (620) 262-7849. They practice each week from 6-7pm and play on the fourth Sunday of each month. Thank you to all who use their gifts this way. There are openings in the choir, so we’d love to have new people!
Administrative Assistant Announcement
We are sad to see her go, but Amber Shelton, our administrative assistant for the last two years, will be moving back to Iowa with her family this month. Her husband took a new job in the school district there so they will be leaving soon in order for their family to be ready for school to start. Amber’s last day will be this Friday, August 17th. We will miss her and are so grateful for her service to Grace these last two years!
SPRC is working on next steps to fill the vacancy as soon as we can. The sub-team has finished reviewing the job description and we expect to go live with that by this weekend. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Lora or our SPRC chair, Lonnie Boyd.

EDUCATION SUNDAY is this week! That means lots of things:
1) Sunday School classes kick off for a new year at 9:30am, including College Class kicking back off!
2) We do a special prayer during worship for teachers, students, parents, staff, administrators, volunteers, and more who are involved in education.
3) It’s third Sunday which at Grace means the kids lead us in a mission offering. We are raising money for our neighborhood school. We’ve partnered with them for over a decade! We have weekly classroom volunteers from Grace and we love raising $ so they have a fund for special projects or needs that might come up. We are collecting school supplies in the cutest little mini-schoolhouse box you ever did see.
4) We are kicking off a three week series called “this is us” that will highlight our identity as a church, so if you’re wondering what we are all about it is a great time to be our guest.

SC Foster Parents
Would you like to connect with a college student this school year to help them feel at home in Winfield? We need you! We want to be the best neighbors to SC as we can. Due to the success of our foster program in the past, it keeps expanding! We currently have more students than foster parents, and we’d like to be able to find families for all of them. It involves reaching out to them, going to dinner or inviting them over, joining other foster families for a potluck, attending their events on campus to support them. If you’d like to help change a student’s college experience, reach out to Deb Helmer! Also – do you have a neighbor or friend in town who you think might be a good foster parent? Will you ask them to consider it or tell us the name and we can reach out to them? Thank you!
We have one position open for a music ministry intern! Are you a college student and love choir? Would you like the opportunity to practice leadership skills in music? We’d love to have you on our team! Apply today.
We are kicking off another year of friendship with our Builder neighbors! We welcomed athletes back tonight by helping with their pizza party. Welcome back, Moundbuilder athletes. We can’t wait to cheer you on this year!
General Board of Church & Society
United Methodists are out in force in Washington, DC to renounce racism, white supremacy and all forms of hatred. Instead of the hate descending on DC today, United Methodists are uplifting our values of love, justice and peace. Many thanks to the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church for their vision and leadership!
Last Day of Class
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
One of our Sunday School classes held its last class so that what was left of the group could use their gifts in news ways. This is a wonderful reflection about what it means to hold strong to the gift of death and resurrection.
Praise be to God.
Great Plains Connect
Each week the Great Plains Annual Conference publishes their weekly email announcements just like we do for Grace. We will be giving you all a link to this content if you would like to read it. Click here to read this week’s addition!
